The Study Day will consist of two lectures:
‘Vanessa Bell’s Art and her Tangled Bloomsbury Group Relationships’
Vanessa Bell was a founding and leading member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her artistic output comprised over 200 paintings, murals, ceramics and designs. Despite the excellence of much of her work, her biography and achievements are often overshadowed by the cutting-edge art criticism of Clive Bell (her husband), the game-changing art theories of Roger Fry (her lover), the technically brilliant paintings of Duncan Grant (her soul mate) and by the quietly astounding books of Virginia Woolf (her sister).
‘The Double Life of John Maynard Keynes’.
This lecture will focus on the art John Maynard Keynes loved, acquired, collected and promoted, plus several paintings that he and his wife sat for. The lecture will feature paintings by Cezanne, Delacroix, Derain, Manet, Picasso, Seurat, Sickert and others. In some circles, Keynes is well-known as an economist whose ideas had a profound impact on society in the inter-war years. At the same time, he was a core member of the Bloomsbury Group.
Our lecturer Raymond Warburton has had a life-long love of art. In his twenties, he studied social sciences at the London School of Economics. But all that changed in 2011, when Ray became a guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, and gained an MA in the History of Art.
Ray has already visited the Arts Society Malling twice. In 2023 he lectured on The Top 20 most Popular Artworks in Britain Today, and earlier this year he gave a talk on Banksy.
